Amma’s health slowly started deteriorating after the year 2000. During November 2003, Amma was telling Sesha Kavi (poet) Sri A.D.M. Panneerselvam (author of many books and poems) that this Karthikai deepam would be the last deepam she will be seeing. Amma indirectly told many other devotees that she would be soon leaving but they could not understand. Like she said, her health worsened on the Karthikai deepam day.
Later Amma smilingly told him, “Last time, Indra Vimanam (flight) came to pick me up, but I am in extension period now.”
Amma was talking to many of her devotees by phone during the last one year period before attaining maha samadhi. One such blessed devotee was Padma who was residing in Canada that time. She used to call Amma by phone every week and discuss spiritual matters for hours with her. Before Amma hung up the phone, she used to tell Padma to call her again the following week. In the last week of December 2003, when Padma called, Amma spoke for sometime and didn’t ask her to call the following week again.
On 11th January 2004 (Magam star, Koodaravalli in Margazhi Tamil month) Amma attained maha samadhi. It was a great loss for all her devotees around the world.
After Amma attained maha samadhi, her physical body didn’t get cold and stiff like other human beings. A samadhi shrine was built for her at the place (in the Seshadri Swamigal Ashram) where she had shown before. She was seated in padmasana (lotus posture) before she was laid to rest in the samadhi shrine.
Amma is a great self realized master. Like Lord Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, lived like a normal human being and showed the world how to live in a dharmic (righteous way), Amma who is an embodiment of Goddess Parashakthi lived like a normal human being and showed the world that one can attain self-realization even with householder responsibilities.
Amma used to give sesha mantra Om Sadguru Sri Seshadri Swamigal Tiruvadikke along with a sesha number to her devotees and helped them to get rid of their physical ailments, obstacles in life, curses etc.,
Kadappai Sri Satchidananda Swamigal gave her the title Neruppil Kanindha Kani. This means a fruit ripened in the test of fire. Mahaan Sri Seshadri Swamigal gave her the title Iga Para Sowbhagyavathi. This means that one who had attained greatness in the material as well as the spiritual world. Devotees called Amma as Gnana Thai which means the mother of wisdom. Devas called her as Brahma Rishi.
Om Sadguru Sri Annai Umadeviyar Thiruvadikke.
